Homeless camp cleanup is the process of removing trash, human waste, and biohazards from homeless encampments. It is often a dangerous and challenging task, as the encampments can be filthy and contain sharp objects, needles, and other hazardous materials.

Prior to doing any cleanups, the first priority is the safety of the cleanup crew. It is important to take steps to protect the safety of the cleanup crew, such as wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and using proper disposal

Our team at Associated Services recently conducted a homeless campsite cleanup  which involved a campsite that was about .350 yards long (about the size of a par 4 hole). We removed over 9 tons of trash from the property that had been strewn around by the homeless campers.  Below is a summary of what we watch for during a process like this.

The specific steps involved in homeless camp cleanup vary depending on the size and condition of the encampment, but they typically include the following:

  • Removal of trash and debris: This includes everything from food wrappers and clothing to furniture and appliances. Much of the food waste attracts rodents which increases the potential for diseases.
  • Removal of human waste: This is often the most difficult and dangerous part of the cleanup process, as it can involve contact with raw sewage.
  • Removal of biohazards: This includes drug paraphernalia, needles, and other materials that can pose a health risk. These biohazards can be mixed with the trash, so great care must be taken for the safe removal.
  • Disinfection of the area: This is done to kill any bacteria or viruses that may be present.

In addition to the physical removal of trash and debris, homeless camp cleanup can often include the following:

  • Disposal of personal belongings: If the belongings are not in good condition or cannot be identified, they are typically disposed of.
  • Documentation of the cleanup: This is done to track the amount of trash and debris removed, as well as the biohazards encountered.

Homeless camp cleanup is an important public health measure that can help reduce the spread of disease. It also helps protect the beauty of the community and surrounding communities as well as protecting property values. It helps improve the quality of life for everyone in the community.
